You should be sincere and speak with conviction during your prayer, since your aim is to ask for guidance. When you’re ready, start your prayer by performing 2 Rak’ah. Once you’re cleansed, point your right index finger towards the sky and recite a prayer of witness, which is, “I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah alone he is one he has no partner and I bear witness that Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is his chosen servant and true messenger.” After saying this prayer, prepare your space for Istikhara by laying a prayer mat on the ground and turning to face Mecca. As you wash up, center your thoughts on what you want to pray about. To perform Istikhara, first do Wudu to make sure you’re cleansed, which involves you washing your hands, face, nose, mouth, and lower forearms 3 times. Where "haadhal amr" (this matter) appears, mention the affair for which you seek guidance. But if in Your Knowledge, this matter be bad for my faith, for my livelihood, and for the consequences of my affairs, then turn it away from me, and turn me away therefrom, and ordain for me the good wherever it be, and cause me to please with it. O Allah! If in Your Knowledge this matter be good for my faith, for my livelihood, and for the consequences of my affairs, then ordain it for me, and make it easy for me, and bless me therein. O Allah! Behold I ask You the good through Your Knowledge, and ability through Your Power, and beg (Your favour) out of Your infinite Bounty. Wa aqdur lial khayra haythu kaana thumma a-rdhiniy bihee.
